The sweaty sofa: why late summer is the perfect time to clean your upholstery

5 March 2026

Late summer in Christchurch is a glorious time of year. You might head up to Rapaki for a grunty bike ride, or maybe to a quiet bay over in Lyttelton Harbour for some muscle-burning paddleboarding. Or perhaps you just have to get stuck into those outdoor jobs while the weather is still balmy.

And at the end of a long, hot afternoon, we do what anyone would do: we flop onto the lounge suite to relax.

But while you are enjoying the last of the summer weather, your sofa is quietly suffering.

Your upholstery acts as a giant catch-all in your living room, and summer takes a unique toll. Over the past few months, it has been absorbing a heavy cocktail of sweat, body oils, sunscreen, pizza toppings, and  airborne dust. As the days begin to shorten and we look toward autumn, your lounge suite is likely in desperate need of a deep restorative clean!

Here is why "Summer Sofa Syndrome" is a real issue for your furniture, why you shouldn't wait until winter to fix it, and how a professional upholstery clean can save your fabric from premature ageing.

The snag of summer lounging

During the colder months, we sit on our furniture wrapped in layers. Jeans, thick jumpers, socks, and cosy blankets create a physical barrier between our skin and the fabric of the sofa.

In summer, that barrier disappears. We live in shorts, t-shirts, and bare feet. This massive increase in direct skin-to-fabric contact dramatically changes what your sofa absorbs.

1. The invisible layer of sweat and body oils Even if you don't feel really sweaty, human skin naturally produces sebum (a light body oil) and perspiration to regulate temperature. When you sit on your sofa with bare legs or arms, these oils transfer directly into the upholstery fibres. Because oil and water do not mix, these lipids do not evaporate. Instead, they soak into the fabric, oxidise, and slowly turn a little rancid. Over time, this oil build-up alters the colour of the fabric and makes the armrests and headrests look greasy or dark.

Interestingly, some medications will also significantly alter your body’s chemistry; we sometimes see care labels that encourage protecting furniture from sweat and body oils while on some chemotherapy treatments.

2. The sunblock factor Sunscreen is a staple of a New Zealand summer, but it is an absolute nightmare for upholstery. Think about how sunscreen is engineered: it is specifically designed to adhere firmly to your skin and resist being washed off by water or sweat. When you sit on the couch after applying sunblock, those heavy chemical compounds and zinc oxides rub off onto the fabric. Once sunblock bonds with upholstery fibres, it creates a sticky, invisible trap. All the dust and dirt that would normally fall off or get vacuumed off will stick to that residue, quickly turning a pristine white or grey sofa into a grubby, stiff-feeling mess.

3. Dust, pollen, and the classic nor'wester We love throwing our windows open to catch the breeze, but in Canterbury that often means inviting that gusty nor'wester straight into our living rooms. Summer winds carry a massive amount of fine dust, agricultural pollen, and environmental pollutants. Because your sofa is usually the largest piece of fabric furniture in the room, it will inevitably trap airborne particles within its weaves. Each time you sit down, the latest deposits of dust and pollen get pushed further into the fabric.

The winter trap: why you need to act now

You might be thinking, "I’ll think about deep cleans in the spring." But ignoring a sweaty sofa at the end of summer may not be your best decision. Here’s why.

Once the autumn chill arrives, we tend to shut the windows, close curtains earlier to conserve warmth, and turn on the heat pumps and log burners. As the weather gets chillier, our homes spend more time as tightly sealed boxes.

When you heat a room, you warm up the body oils, sweat, and pet dander trapped in your upholstery. This contributes hugely to that stale, musty, "closed-in" smell that many homes develop during winter.

Furthermore, if you suffer from asthma or allergies, spending your winter evenings sitting on a sofa packed with summer pollen and dust mites will increase the load on your immune system. By extracting this summer build-up now, you are ensuring your living room remains a healthy, fresh, and hygienic environment before you are forced to spend more time indoors.

The dangers of the DIY spot-clean

When homeowners notice the armrests of their sofa looking a bit dark, the first instinct is often to grab a supermarket upholstery spray or a wet cloth and start scrubbing.

We strongly advise taking “Hmmmmm moment”! Upholstery can be incredibly unforgiving, and DIY cleaning can quickly end in disaster for several reasons:

  • Watermarks: Many modern sofas are made from natural blends like cotton, linen, or viscose. DIY cleaning can result in the fabric drying unevenly, leaving a permanent, dark brown watermark ring that looks worse than the original stain. Some fibres will lose their structure when wet, and this can’t be reversed.

  • Pushing dirt deeper: When you scrub a sofa with a foamy supermarket chemical, you are not actually extracting the dirt. You are simply dissolving it and pushing it deeper.

  • Fabric damage: Scrubbing can cause "pilling" (those annoying little balls of fluff), and/or fuzzing of surface fibres. As with carpet, fuzzing can usually not be reversed as it is evidence of permanently altered the fibres.

The professional upholstery reset

To properly remove the sticky bonds of body oils, sunscreen, and embedded dust, you need professional chemistry and controlled extraction.

At Advanced Carpet Cleaning, we treat your lounge suite with the same care you would give a delicate piece of clothing.

  • Fibre identification: First, we establish the fabric’s composition. This dictates the temperature, pressure, cleaning solutions, and fibre-specific additives we will need to use, if any.

  • Oil-breaking pre-sprays: We apply specialised, upholstery-safe pre-sprays that are scientifically formulated to break down heavy lipid bonds. This is usually sufficient to dissolve the sticky sunscreen and body oils without the need for aggressive scrubbing.

  • Low-moisture extraction: We use specialised upholstery hand-tools. They are designed to effectively manage the curves and shapes of furniture while maintaining precisely controlled amounts of cleaning solution and vacuum. This powerful extraction flushes dirt, allergens, and excess moisture out of the suite, avoiding the adverse outcomes of over-wetting or long drying times.

Prepare your sofa for winter living

Once your lounge suite is beautifully clean, fresh, and free of summer sweat, it is the perfect time to think about protection. Fabric protection gives you the best possible chance of stain removal. What furniture stains are likely to show up in your house?

Winter is the season of red wine by the fire, hot mugs of coffee, and kids eating snacks while watching TV. We highly recommend finishing your late-summer upholstery clean with an application of our premium Organic MicroSeal Fabric Protection. This treatment penetrates the fibres, making it less likely that winter spills will become permanent stains. Organic Microseal doesn’t change the colour or feel of your fabric, and it will stay active in the fabric even after two or three professional cleans.

So, why not take a wander past your lounge suite, and think of the summer it’s had! It’s time to give it the late-summer reset it deserves. Call the textile experts at Advanced Carpet Cleaning on 0800 566 576 to arrange a professional upholstery clean. With the icky remnants of summer gone from your couch, your living room will look, feel, and smell completely refreshed.
