For an overview of dealing with carpet stains, here are a few key reminders.

First things first: Timing is everything

The quicker you act, the better your chance of fully removing a stain. Most carpet fibres—especially wool—are sensitive and absorbent, so time is critical. And work patiently: never scrub or rub! It’s one of the fastest ways to permanently damage your carpet fibres.

General stain treatment tips

Here’s your starting checklist before diving into any DIY cleaning:

  • Avoid household cleaners not designed for carpet. Many contain harsh chemicals that can set the stain or bleach the fibres.

  • Always blot, never rub. Use a clean, white towel and press gently to absorb liquids.

  • Check your carpet type. Wool, nylon, olefin, or blends all react differently.

  • If unsure, call a professional carpet cleaner before attempting anything.

Common carpet stain scenarios (and what to do)

Let’s break down some of the most common culprits we see in Christchurch homes and how to treat them safely.

A glass of wine has spilled on a carpet.

Red wine

Ah yes—the classic. If you’ve just knocked over a glass of Shiraz:

1.     Blot as much liquid as you can with a dry towel.

2.     Pour slowly a solution of gentle detergent and warm water over the area.

3.     Blot again gently and repeat with warm water.

4.     Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you’re no longer seeing red transferring onto the towel.

Still there? Don’t panic. You’ve made a good start. Red wine stains may require   professional treatment, especially on light-coloured or wool carpets.

Pet accidents (urine, vomit, faeces)

These can be tricky because they bring both stain and odour.  As soon as you can:

1.      Remove solids gently and blot up liquids.

2.      Apply a vinegar/water solution.

3.      Follow with gentle detergent and blot again.

Pet urine can soak into the underlay and subfloor, so for recurring odours, you may need a professional odour treatment.

Coffee and tea

Tannins in coffee and tea can cause staining fast—so act fast!

1.     Blot immediately.

2.     Use a mix of warm water and detergent.

3.     Rinse with cold water and blot dry.

Make-up, lipstick, and mascara

These often contain oils or dyes and tackled incorrectly can quickly become a much larger stain.

1.      Use dry-cleaning solvent very sparingly. See guide for suggested solvents and for application method.

2.      Blot gently.

3.      Rinse with a mild detergent and warm water.

What about tough stuff like paint?

There’s nothing quite as alarming as seeing paint on your carpet! For small amounts:

·        Water-based paint: Blot with warm water and detergent. Don’t let it dry.

·        Oil-based paint: Use mineral turps very sparingly and blot.

For large amounts, contact your insurer and/or give us a call for immediate help.

Pollen, printer toner, turmeric powder and soot: The don’t-touch list

·        Hold your vacuum hose 1cm above the stain and gently vacuum the loose material.

·        Do not use the vacuum head or press the hose onto the carpet.

When to call in the experts

If the stain remains, and/or :

·        Involves bodily fluids

·        Has soaked through to the underlay

·        Has already been treated using the Stain Treatment Guide

·        Has changed the colour of your carpet fibre

…it’s time to call the pros.

We all love it when the sunlight streams through the windows. It makes home feel bright, airy and inviting. But while these glorious rays lift our mood, their UV rays can do stealthy, permanent damage to carpets and furnishings. And ignorance is not bliss! Understanding how UV exposure works – and how to prevent or minimise its effects – is your best defence. Let’s take a quick look at the science behind NZ’s UV rays, the signs that damage is occurring, and what you can do to stave off UV deterioration in your home. Which UV rays are damaging to fibres and fabrics? Both UVA and UVB rays can cause permanent damage to fibres and fabrics, causing irreversible fading, bleaching, and weakening of carpet fibres which causes thinning. UVA rays penetrate into the fibres and cause gradual, cumulative damage leading to colour fading, brittleness, matting, pilling and breakage. UVA rays can cause white or light-coloured carpets to yellow. UVB can bleach fabrics and fibres as its damage is to the surface of the fibre. UVB is often blocked by window-glass so they primarily affect carpets and furnishings with direct exposure such as in front of open ranch sliders. Standard residential window glass will almost completely block UVB rays, but do not block UVA rays.
