The Warranty Gap: Are You Sure You’re Covered?

21 May 2026

You’ve finally accomplished a long-awaited, gorgeous, and major improvement to your home: new carpet. The samples have been pored over, the underlay upgraded, and the installers have finally left, leaving behind that unmistakable "new carpet" scent and softness underfoot. You’ve glanced at the "15-Year Performance Guarantee" or the "Life-of-the-Carpet Stain Warranty" and popped it in the filing cabinet.

But as the months roll into years, you may just find yourself wishing you could turn back time because it dawns on you there’s such a thing as “The Warranty Gap.” It is the gap between what a consumer thinks maintenance looks like and what the manufacturer’s legal fine print actually mandates.

To ensure you don’t find yourself in checkmate territory should you ever need to claim on the product’s warranty or guarantee, we share with you four of the most common missteps.

1.     The "When It Needs It" Fallacy

Most homeowners view professional carpet cleaning as an optional, occasional and a corrective measure—a spring clean after winter, a summer refresh before visitors, or after the puppy’s toilet training is finally finished.

Warranty providers see it quite differently.

To a manufacturer, professional cleaning is preventative maintenance and is closely linked with the product’s performance that they guarantee.

If you look at your carpet’s care guidelines, you will find a common thread: to maintain your warranty, the carpet must be professionally cleaned using Hot Water Extraction (HWE) by a qualified technician at least once every 24 months (many stipulating once every 12 to 18 months).

2.     Disregarding Cleaning Directions

To stay on the right side of your warranty you need to understand and respect your carpet’s cleaning directions. Just like the other household items—cars, clothes, cooktops—your carpet comes with a definitive list of do’s and don’ts.

Is your carpet wool, nylon, polyester, polypropylene, wool/nylon blend, or a Rhino carpet? And is it loop pile, cut pile, or loop-and-cut pile, felted, premium, hard twist, or plush? Is it an imported carpet, or New Zealand made?

A professional technician ensures the cleaning method matches the manufacturer’s specifications. You’re better protected in any future warranty claim if you can show you’ve been following the guidelines all along.

So, what’s our word of caution? Be very careful if you’re deciding to clean your own carpet; and be equally careful about engaging a company based on price alone.

3.     Inviting the Vandals

With their penchant for keratin, carpet beetles and moths just love a wool feast! The benefit of modern NZ premium wool carpets is that during manufacture they are treated to ensure solid protection against carpet moths and beetles.

However, your warranty may include an obligation to keep the carpet reasonably free of food sources for these unwanted guests. Hair, fur, and downy feathers can build up in areas hard to reach with the vacuum cleaner. If a beetle infestation takes hold because there is excessive build-up, some carpet is likely to get nibbled and the manufacturer is unlikely to cover the come to the warranty party.

4.     The Bold Confidence: I Can Do That!

Now, Kiwis love to get stuff done by themselves whenever possible, so surely hiring a steam cleaning machine and whipping through the house on the weekend ticks the Cleaning and Maintenance box?

Carpet companies pull no punches: they stipulate Hot Water Extraction (HWE), commonly known as steam cleaning, carried out by a professional who adheres to industry standards endorsed by carpet manufacturers.

The potential for long-term damage from accidentally over-wetting a carpet, using incorrect chemicals or at incorrect ratios, applying too much heat or over-working an area are real for DIYers. Warranty T&Cs commonly specify that DIY carpet shampooing, steam cleaning or dry cleaning will void your warranty.

Why Vacuuming Alone Isn’t Enough

Disappointment with how a carpet is wearing is a common reason why customers look to invoke their warranty or guarantee. But the #1 reason warranty claims are rejected is "preventable neglect." And rightly so.

When you look at your carpet, you see the surface. Carpet pile is in fact a complex structure of natural or synthetic polymers and by their very nature, they trap dust and contaminants. Your vacuum is excellent at removing the "top-layer" dust—the light bits-and-bobs that sit on or close to the surface.

However, domestic vacuum cleaners cannot remove the heavier, non-soluble particles that come into the home from driveways or garden paths, such as silica, clay, and stone. These travel quickly to the base of the carpet pile, well beyond the reach of the home vacuum cleaner. They act as abrasive grit.

It sounds dramatic, but it’s true: normal use results in those tiny shards of grit abrading carpet pile like sandpaper, scoring and scratching the protective cuticle of the wool or the smooth surface of the nylon. This weakens the fibres—meaning they fold over more easily—and also creates "light-scattering" damage. The carpet isn't necessarily that dirty due to food or drink; it has experienced chafing, dulling its appearance.

A regular professional clean, however, can reduce the amount of abrasive grit wearing away your carpet—the stronger extraction means that the heavier, dry soils don’t get the chance to build up and prematurely damage your carpet.
